NAT Exam - What Is It and What Purpose Does It Serve?

What is the NAT Exam?

The NAT-TEST is an examination that measures the Japanese language ability of students who are not native Japanese speakers. The tests are separated by difficulty (five levels) and general ability is measured in three categories: Grammar/Vocabulary, Listening, and Reading Comprehension.

Purpose of the NAT Exam

The format of the NAT-TEST and the questions tailored to each level are based on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). It serves as a great preparatory tool for the JLPT and is also recognized by Japanese language schools and immigration authorities as proof of language proficiency.

Levels of the NAT Exam

  • Level 1 (Extremely Advanced): Equivalent to JLPT N1.
  • Level 2 (Advanced): Equivalent to JLPT N2.
  • Level 3 (Intermediate): Equivalent to JLPT N3.
  • Level 4 (Elementary): Equivalent to JLPT N4.
  • Level 5 (Basic): Equivalent to JLPT N5.

NAT Exam Schedule and Locations

The NAT-TEST is held six times a year, which is more frequent than the JLPT (held twice a year). This gives students more opportunities to certify their language skills.
