Life in Seoul: A Student's Survival Guide

Seoul is a vibrant, 24/7 city that blends tradition with futuristic technology. For a student, it can be overwhelming but incredibly rewarding. Here is your survival guide to navigating life in the Korean capital.

1. Accommodation: Know Your Options

  • Dormitory (Gisuksa): Cheapest option ($200-$400/mo), usually on campus. Strict curfew rules.
  • Goshiwon: Very small study rooms with a bed and desk. Cheap ($200-$350/mo), includes free rice/kimchi, no deposit needed.
  • One-Room (Studio): Private apartment. Expensive deposit ($5000+), rent ($400-$700/mo). Best for privacy.

2. Transportation: The T-Money Card

Buy a T-Money card at any convenience store ($2.50). You can use it for subways, buses, taxis, and even to pay at convenience stores.
App Tip: Download KakaoMetro or Naver Map. Google Maps does NOT work well in Korea.

3. Food on a Budget

Eating out is part of the culture, implying you don't always have to cook.

  • University Cafeteria (Gukbap): Very cheap ($3-$5) and healthy meals.
  • Convenience Stores (Pyeonijeom): Ramen, Gimbap, and Bento boxes are lifesavers for late-night study sessions.

4. Cultural Etiquette

  • Recycling: Korea is very strict about recycling (food waste vs general waste). Learn your district's rules immediately.
  • Respect: Always bow when greeting elders or professors. Use two hands when giving or receiving something.

Seoul offers an experience of a lifetime. Be open-minded, make Korean friends, and enjoy the adventure!
